Match Report: 859 Runs in One Day

This was one of the most remarkable one-day games you will ever see. 859 runs were scored, and it came down to the final over.

For readers new to cricket: in a One Day International (ODI), each team bats for up to 50 overs (an over is six legal deliveries). A score of 300 is usually very good. Scoring 430 to win is something very few teams in history have ever done.

England's Innings: Brook's Double Hundred

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and chose to bowl. England's openers, Tom Banton (50 off 51) and Ben Duckett (29), put on 74 before Dunith Wellalage removed both of them.

Then Joe Root (69 off 66) and Harry Brook added 159 off 127 balls. After Root fell at 244, Brook went into overdrive with Will Jacks. The pair smashed 185 off just 77 balls, and Brook reached his double century before falling to the very last ball of the innings for 202 off 116. Jacks finished on 66 not out off 30.

England's 429 for 4 looked like a winning total. Only Wellalage (2 for 56) kept his economy under six an over.

At least one report has described Brook's knock as the fastest double century in ODI history.

Sri Lanka's Chase: Rathnayake, Shanaka and a Final-Over Finish

Sri Lanka's chase started badly. Josh Tongue bowled Kamindu Mendis, and captain Kusal Mendis was run out without facing a ball. At 24 for 2, the target looked impossible.

But Avishka Fernando and Pavan Rathnayake added 166 off 137 balls. Avishka fell for 97, three short of a century, caught and bowled by Jamie Overton. Rathnayake carried on to 130 off 106, with 15 fours and three sixes, adding 133 off 79 balls with Dasun Shanaka.

Shanaka hit eight sixes in his 97 off 50, but he fell at 363 for 5, with 67 still needed from 36 balls. Janith Liyanage kept Sri Lanka in the hunt with 61 not out off 27.

Turning Point: The Final Over

Tongue bowled Dunith Wellalage and Eshan Malinga with consecutive balls in the final over, and Sri Lanka were 423 for 8, needing 7 from 3 balls.

Liyanage and Asitha Fernando held their nerve. Liyanage struck a six, Asitha took a single, and Sri Lanka got home with one ball to spare.
